It started
at home.
We moved to South Carolina for a work opportunity. Along with everything we packed, we brought a dream we wanted to make room for: our own açaí shop.
We’re a family business, and Surf’s Up started in the place you might expect: our home kitchen. We opened our doors in 2024, but there was a lot of tasting before that.
Once we decided to go for it, we tried the açaí products we could find. We kept hoping to taste one and say, “That’s it.” But nothing felt quite right to us. Many were sweeter than we wanted, and we felt the added fruit and sweeteners often covered up the açaí flavor we loved.
We wanted to let açaí be açaí.
So we started from scratch.
OUR HOME LAB
Hundreds of versions.
One home kitchen.
For several months, our kitchen was our little home lab. We made hundreds of versions, tasting and adjusting until we had something we were proud to share. Through all of it, we kept coming back to organic ingredients and no added sugar.
Honestly, some of the versions with added sugar tasted really good. It would have been easy to choose one. But we wanted to make the açaí we had been looking for ourselves, so we stayed with no added sugar.
No added sugar became a commitment we chose to keep.

Then came the soft serve machine. Using our own mix gave us the swirl you see today, and helped us serve the same flavor and texture each time you come in.
When we say we make our bases from scratch, we mean we make the mixes ourselves. We don’t start with a finished commercial açaí sorbet. That part still matters to us just as much as it did in our kitchen.
We didn’t stop experimenting when we opened. In our first two years, we developed our mango and coconut flavors too. Every base is still made by us, from scratch, with no added sugar.
